About Richard Gauntlett

Richard GauntlettRichard is a comedian and an actor whose interests in music hall, silent film and variety have inspired much of his career switching from circus, West End musicals, opera and variety. He is a regular at The Leeds City Varieties, Brick Lane Music Hall and The Player's Theatre in London both as an act and as Mr Chairman.

Richard, a proud member of The Grand Order of Water Rats, tours extensively with his unique array of speciality acts - from Halifax to Hong Kong and from Dublin to Dundee - seasons include: WOT A CARRY ON IN BLACKPOOL; THE RUSS ABBOT SHOW; THE BOBBY DAVRO SHOW; CANNON AND BALL, JOE PASQUALE’S KAK RAIDER TOUR, HAVE A LAUGH WITH BRADLEY WALSH and TWO OLD FARTS IN THE NIGHT with Barry Cryer and Willie Rushton and countless tours with the celebrated HISS AND BOO MUSIC HALL COMPANY .

Richard appeared at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer, topping the bill in their legendary summer show (2000 and 2001) and makes regular appearances on ‘large boats’ travelling the world.

Television work includes Troyboy (a pig!) in PIGSTY; LIFT OFF, IT'S WICKED! (Live!) and BODYTALK for Children's BBC and WEDNESDAY AT 8 and THE SOOTY SHOW for Thames. Richard also realized one of his dreams by playing a baddie (Urak) in the DR. WHO adventure TIME AND THE RANI. Film work includes several fleeting glimpses as one of Bob Hoskins' stunt doubles' in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and playing Peter Quince in Tangent Film’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM.

Richard began his career in the musical BARNUM with Michael Crawford at the Opera House in Manchester followed by a long run at the Victoria Palace in London and the BBC film version. Eight years later he returned to BARNUM for the National tour and another West End run playing the Ringmaster and taking over P.T.Barnum himself. Other theatre work includes: Sam Crow in FAT PIG - THE MUSICAL and OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR! both at the Leicester Haymarket; Tobias in David Toguri's production of Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD at the Bristol Old Vic; Leopold in English National Opera's DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Coliseum; Puck in Britton’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM at La Feniche Opera House in Venice and for Hamburg State Opera, CUPID for the Breganz Opera Festival, Austria in MASKERADE which transferred to London’s Royal Opera House, the Parson in THE PARSON PIRATES and John Wellington Wells in THE SORCERER for Opera Della Luna and Sir Joseph Porter in HMS PINAFORE, The Judge in TRIAL BY JURY and Jack Point in YEOMEN OF THE GUARD at The Buxton Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.. He was the Circus Director and Footit for the musical LAUTREC at the Shaftesbury Theatre and played the comic fall-guy Lefou in the original cast of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the Dominion Theatre in the West End where he remained for the entire run. In 2004/5 Richard joined the West End cast of LION KING playing Timon.

Richard is delighted to be returning to The Theatre Royal in Norwich for the eleventh year running for SLEEPING BEAUTY. He is also, this year, writing Beckenham’s SLEEPING BEAUTY, Hull Ice Arena’s SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS ON ICE! and writing and directing Newport Riverfront Theatre’s CINDERELLA.
